It is said that fish and chips in Britain is equal to nasi goreng in Indonesia: ubiquitous, cheap and filling. I have never been to any part of Great Britain (someday hopefully!!) to have the first-hand British fish and chips experience, so let’s try out Chippie British & Chip in Cipete, Jaksel!

Chippie was tucked inside a commercial complex called Cipra 65, making it invisible from the street side. The chirpy blue branding kinda reminded me of coin laundry. I love the chicken (why not fish?) mascot and its styling – super cute bucket hat and rainboots.

The owner herself is half-British and encouraged by her London native father to open an authentic British fish and chips place in Jakarta, driven by her unsatisfied cravings whenever she was back in Jakarta. Let’s find out what’s so different with the British fish and chips…

We ordered both two kinds of fish and chips: dory (tender and moist) and red snapper (firm and slightly sweet, bigger in size). Served with hand-cut fries (my favorite kind of fries) and your choice of sauce: tartar, curry, mushy peas, hot honey or mentai. Condiments provided were tomato sauce, chili sauce, home blend salt and Sarson’s malt vinegar.

The fish tasted light, but I wouldn’t call it bland. The batter was light and crispy. Sprinkling it with a dash of malt vinegar brought a bit of tang. I loved it! What stood out the most was the ungreasy feeling while enjoying the whole dish – I didn’t feel overwhelmed or squeamish. Sometimes my stomach had bad reactions after digesting too much oily food, but thankfully it didn’t happen.

Final thoughts:
Food: 8/10 | Service: 7/10 | Ambience: 7/10
Worth trying!
